Top 5 Split Testing Mistakes To Avoid

Split testing is a great way to quickly assess what works and what doesn’t work to improve your ROI. Before starting any split test, you should consider the following Top 5 Tips:

  1. Know Your Objective
You should always plan your tests ahead of time. Plan what elements you want to test AND plan your objective for the test.
  2. Same Offer
Your split test should not alter the offer unless that is your objective. Do not make the mistake of testing more than one objective at a time, this will avoid skewing the effectiveness of your page.
  3. Same Traffic
Do not change your traffic source during a split test. What is effective for your house list may not hold true for facebook traffic.
  4. Too Many Variations
In most cases you should limit yourself to 3 or 4 variations. The only time you could run more is if you have very high traffic, otherwise you may spend weeks getting enough traffic to determine a winner. If you have a lot of variations to test just run them 2 or 3 at a time.
  5. End Too Soon
Don’t be too eager to end the test and declare your ‘winner’. Unless the ‘winner’ has 95% chance to win, you should not consider it the ‘winner’. It is better to wait and allow more traffic through and get a proper assessment of the success or failure of new page variations.
